A design orientated Architect, that has a background of working with the top 20% design orientated practices might well recognise the following truths:

  • Sadly, you're unlikely to feel like you're fulfilling your potential.
  • You feel more like a number rather than a priority.
  • Organisations can still be slow to progress you up the ladder.
  • You're probably not earning £40k - £50k basic salary with a big annual bonus.

It really isn't difficult to see where the opportunities (to experience and learn a great deal under a partner level individual from an AJ Top 10 background) lies in this job.

You'll be the first Architect (other than the Director) into a new creatively focussed team. The Design Director has a big award winning background. You will be mentored by and working day to day with this person on projects of RIBA National Award winning standards. The opportunity to progress in this job is next to unbeatable, you're the number two to the Design lead of an AJ Top 40 practice. They'll build the rest of the team over the next few years around the two of you.

You'll be in a job where your project becomes your baby. You will focus on the first three RIBA stages alongside the practice-wide Design leader, in a company that employs several hundred people across the UK.

If you're wondering; Why the new team? Why do I get a big opportunity to be part of something with so much backing, that will raise the profile of the practice and you personally? The practice already does attractive work. They also do commercial work that makes money but doesn't exactly put them out there at the awards. What the practice really wants is that next level of design excellence. They want more awards and a brand that is associated with that handful of famous practices that reach iconic status.

Excited yet?

You could be a 2 year PQE Architect or you could be 20 year grizzled veteran. It's all about the person at this level.
